The waste products of digestion are moved through your intestines by muscle contractions called peristalsis. Normally the large intestine absorbs a large portion of the water and salt from this mixture. The water and salt are essential and are reused to perform many of the body’s functions. If too much water is absorbed or if the mixture moves too slowly, constipation may occur.
Generally speaking constipation is;

1. Having less than 3 bowel movements a week.

2. Passing hard stools.

3. Straining to have a bowel movement.

What is considered normal regarding frequency of bowel movements depends on the individual and their lifestyle. It is not a requirement to have a bowel movement every day. As few as three bowel movements a week could be normal provided the stool is soft and not hard and that straining is not required during elimination. Bowel movements can occur as often as three times a day and still be considered normal provided the stool is soft but not loose, and no straining is required.

The consistency of stool, that is whether it is hard or soft, is determined by the amount of water retained in the colon. Water is absorbed from the digested material through the colon wall. The water that is already in the digesting food when it is moved through the intestine is what will be absorbed in the large intestine. Drinking additional water has no effect on how much is absorbed will not improve a condition of constipation. Water in excess to the body’s needs is passed through the kidneys and urinated.

The speed with which food is moved through the intestine will affect the amount of water absorbed and thus the softness and hardness of stool.

If the food is moved too fast through the intestine then less water is absorbed. The more water retained in the stool the softer it will be until it becomes loose. A loose stool and diarrhea are caused by fast movement through the colon.

If the digesting food is moved slowly through the colon then more time is allowed for water absorption. The less water in the stool the thicker the consistency. As the stool consistency becomes thicker and harder it takes more voluntary force to eliminate the stool from the rectum and straining may result.

In severe instances of straining it is possible to pucker a small amount of the intestinal lining accompanied by some mucus out of the anus. This condition is called anal prolapse. It is not usually serious and just eliminating the cause of the straining is all the treatment needed. In severe cases of anal prolapse medical treatment may be required.

How to prevent constipation:

Eat a fiber healthy diet of Fruits, Vegetables, Beans, whole-grain cereal, and whole-grain breads.

Reduce fat and sugar in your diet. Watch the sweets and limit how much ice cream, cheese, and processed foods you eat.

Drink plenty of good clean water every day.

Exercise daily. Physical labor, Walking, Hiking, and swimming are very good forms of exercise.

Don’t ignore the urge to have a bowel movement. Remember when you delay going to the toilet, the stool stays in the colon longer and more water is absorbed through the colon walls. The more water that is absorbed from stool the harder it becomes which can lead to constipation.

If you use fiber supplements, be sure to drink plenty of water every day. Fiber supplements require water to work properly. Water is absorbed by the fiber increasing its volume and results in a smooth soft consistency. The use of a fiber supplement without enough water can make constipation worse. I personally use and recommend psyllium husk. I find that it works well for me.

Fiber supplements and gas. Some bacteria in the colon can digest fiber. Generally speaking fiber passes through our digestive system with little or no digestion taking place. However, there are many types of bacteria in the colon and certain types of bacteria can digest some types of fiber. A byproduct of this digestion is gas. Personal experimentation with different types of fiber supplements may lessen the amount of gas. Keep in mind that no two people will necessarily get the same results.

Don’t use stimulant laxatives.

Correctol

Dulcolax

These cause muscles in the intestines to contract. Over use may desensitize the nerves over time and make constipation worse.

An interesting note is that prunes contain a chemical that has a laxative stimulant effect.

Use saline laxatives – Saline laxatives draw more water into the colon which softens the stool allowing it to pass easier. Don’t over use any laxative. If you must use a laxative then Milk of magnesia is a good saline laxative choice.

Constipation is more likely:

Older adults

Persons who don’t get enough exercise

Eating a low fiber diet

Not drinking enough water

When you’re pregnant – Changes in hormone levels and the uterus pressing against your intestines can also cause constipation.

Constipation is a common gastrointestinal problem that is experienced by millions Americans each year and is a major factor in Colon Health. Women and adults age 65 and older, pregnant women, and women after childbirth may experience constipation. It is also a common problem following surgery.

If you have a bowel movement less than three times a week then you may be constipated. It is important that the stools be soft and easy to eliminate. If stools are hard, dry, small in size and difficult to eliminate then that is a sign of constipation. Straining, bloating, and a full bowel sensation are also signs of more severe constipation.

Normal bowel movement frequency varies from person to person. In some cases three times a week may be sufficient and for others a bowel movement everyday is normal. The key is to pass soft stool with ease, no straining, and no discomfort.

Most constipation is temporary and not serious. Everyone will experience constipation at one time or other. It is usually caused by poor eating habits. Not getting enough fiber, not drinking enough water, and not getting enough exercise can each lead to constipation.

Causes, Prevention, and Treatment
Lower digestive system.

Understanding Constipation and Colon Health Advice

It helps to know how food moves through the digestive system, colon, and small intestine to understand constipation. Food is moved through the digestive system by muscular contractions of the muscles in the walls of the soft tissue organs of the digestive system. The muscular contractions are called peristalsis and result in an undulating constriction that pushes food in one direction through the digestive tract. In the colon water is absorbed from the food to form solid waste or stool. The muscle contractions in the colon push the stool into the rectum where it is stored until eliminated by a bowel movement. The amount of time that the stool is in the colon determines how much water is absorbed. Faster movement means less time in the colon and less water removed so the stool is soft and loose. Slow movement through the colon means more time in the colon to absorb water. When the colon absorbs too much water then the result is that stools can become hard and dry.

Causes of constipation

not enough fiber in the diet

Not enough physical activity

changes in life or routine

pregnancy

aging

travel

abuse of laxatives

ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement

Not drinking enough water

stroke

colon and rectum problems

chronic constipation

medications

milk

irritable bowel syndrome

Not Enough Fiber

Eat a healthy high fiber diet and you will be less likely to get constipated. A diet low in fiber or high in fats is the most common cause of constipation today.

The body can’t digest the fiber from the fruits, vegetables, and grains that you eat. Fiber creates bulk and absorbs water. Soluble fiber dissolves easily in water and causes stool to be a soft texture in the intestines. Insoluble fiber passes through the intestines almost unchanged. All fiber increases the bulk and stays soft in texture in the colon. That helps to keep the stool soft and easy to pass.

Americans barely eat half of the recommended daily requirement of fiber each day. Try not to eat refined and processed foods from which natural fiber has been removed. Don’t choose foods that are quick such as fast foods, or prepared foods which are processed and low in fiber.

Drink Enough Water

Drink water to add fluid to the colon and bulk to stools, making bowel movements softer and easier to pass. Everyone should drink plenty of water each day but especially those who have problems with constipation. Coffee, and cola drinks contain caffeine and will worsen the symptoms of constipation by increasing the chance of dehydration. This is also true of Alcohol.

Get Enough Exercise

A general lack of regular exercise can lead to constipation. Constipation often occurs in persons who spend a lot of time in bed after an accident or during an illness. The fact that constipation is common in older people may also be due to lack of exercise. It seems that a general lack of regular physical exercise can lead to constipation although doctors don’t understand just why this is so.

Changes in Lifestyle, Habits, and Routine

Women may become constipated during pregnancy because of hormonal changes or because the uterus pushes against and restricts flow through the intestine. Aging also has an effect on bowel movements and regularity. Hormone levels cause changes in metabolism and a slower metabolism results in less gastrointestinal activity. It is also easy to become constipated when traveling when the normal diet and regular daily routine is disrupted.

Don’t Ignore the Urge to Have a Bowel Movement – Colon Health Advive

People ignore the urge to have a bowel because they don’t want to use a public toilet. Being too busy, stress, and just putting it off because of a situation, play, or other reasons may eventually stop feeling the urge to have one, can lead to constipation. It is healthy to eliminate waste and it is unhealthy and not good colon health advice to ignore the urge.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common bowel problem that affects about 15% of the population. IBS is also referred to as spastic colon, spastic colitis, and mucous colitis.

IBS is a functional disease of the muscular organs of the gastrointestinal tract; the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, gallbladder, and colon. What is meant by the term, functional, is that either the muscles of the organs or the nerves that control the organs are not working normally. The nerves that control the organs include the nerves in the muscles of the organs, the spinal cord, and the brain.

Some gastrointestinal diseases can be seen at surgery, on x-rays, and at endoscopies and are easily diagnosed such as ulcers of the stomach. Other diseases can be seen and diagnosed by microscopic examination of biopsies of the small intestine and colon for example; celiac disease and collage nous colitis.

Functional diseases cannot be easily diagnosed. In some cases, the dysfunction can be demonstrated by gastric emptying or antro duodenal motility testing. These tests are complicated and don’t reliably detect digestive system dysfunction. Functional diseases of the digestive system are those diseases which can’t be seen with the naked eye or microscope.

Some infections of the stomach such as Helicobacter pylori cause mild upper intestinal symptoms which can appear to be abnormal function of the stomach or intestines. An infection of the stomach such as Helicobacter pylori can be diagnosed under the microscope by seeing the bacterium and the inflammation gastritis it caused. When treated with antibiotics the patients symptoms disappear.

While IBS is a major functional disease, it is important to mention a second major functional disease referred to as dyspepsia, or functional dyspepsia. The symptoms of dyspepsia are thought to originate from the upper gastrointestinal tract; the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine. The symptoms include pain, bloating, or swelling in the upper abdomen. The symptoms of nausea with or without vomiting and a sense of fullness after eating a small amount of food may or may not be related to meals.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a multi-faceted disorder. Symptoms result from a disturbance in the interaction between muscles in the organs of the digestive system, the brain, and the autonomic nervous system that alters regulation of bowel motility motor function or sensory function.

Irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by symptoms in which abdominal pain or discomfort is associated with loose or more frequent bowel movements, diarrhea, and or constipation.

Treatment options are available to manage IBS-whether symptoms are mild, moderate, or severe.

So far no one has an answer as to what causes irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Until recently many “authorities” on the subject of irritable bowel felt that IBS was psychosomatic. This belief came about because IRS is a functional disease. That is there appears to be nothing wrong with the digestive system organs that affects colon health.

The symptoms however are very real if you are the one afflicted with irritable bowel syndrome. The symptoms vary from person to person One person may experience diarrhea while another may have constipation. Gas, bloated feeling, mucous discharge may be present in stools. Sufferers can also experience moderate to severe abdominal pain. Pain in the lower left abdomen can be so severe as to be debilitating. Then at times the symptoms can disappear altogether. The problem is that there is nothing visibly wrong that the doctors can see but the lower digestive tract just doesn’t work properly.

To understand irritable bowel syndrome and how it affects colon health it is necessary to get a basic understanding of how your digestive system works. The digestive system is essentially a long tube with mouth on the input end and anus at the output end. When food is taken into the mouth the digestive process begins. Food is chewed, mixes with saliva, and the first step in digestion occurs. Starches are broken down into simple sugars by the saliva in the mouth.

The chewed food is swallowed and enters the throat. An involuntary muscle contraction is triggered. The contraction, called peristalsis, occurs in all the smooth muscle organs of the body. The esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines, and the female uterus are all smooth muscle organs and all perform the muscle contractions called peristalsis. This is important to note and will come into play again. Peristalsis moves food down the esophagus and into the stomach. Entry into the stomach is through a valve called the lower esophageal sphincter. The esophageal sphincter keeps gastric juices in the stomach and relaxes only to let food pass. The food is mixed by muscle contractions in the stomach and enzymes and stomach acid are added. After about 30 minutes the mixture, called chime, is ready to pass into the first part of the small intestine.

The small intestine is where most of the nutrients are absorbed from the digested food. The inside walls of the small intestine are convoluted and wrinkled. The wrinkles are called villi and on the villi are even more and finer wrinkles called microvilli. The villi and microvilli increase the surface area inside the small intestine through which the chime passes. The inside surface area is about the size of a tennis court. The villi are specialized as to what nutrients they absorb so there are many different variations of villi.

Remember the muscular contraction called peristalsis? Well it is that same involuntary contraction of the muscle walls that moves the food mixture through the small intestine. It takes a matter of hours for the food to move through the small intestine to the beginning of the large intestine.

Food passes from the small intestine and is pushed by peristalsis into the large intestine known as the colon. By the time the mixture reaches the colon it contains organic left over’s, indigestible fiber, bacteria, and about 25% water. The colon absorbs water from the left over’s. The waste moves into the last section of the large intestine called the rectum. This is the holding area for waste. Final phase is elimination through the anus sphincter muscle.

This is a quick overview of how the digestive system works. We are now getting to the irritable bowel syndrome and how it affects colon health. Remember peristalsis, the muscle contraction that moves the food down the entire length of the digestive system. Peristalsis is an involuntary muscle contraction. The muscles are controlled by the brain. The brain receives input information from the organs in the digestive tract. Nerves called receptors monitor the enzymes, chemicals, pressure, in the digestive system. The brain uses this feedback information to decide what to make the organs in the digestive system do. The brain sends signals to the smooth muscle organs to cause peristalsis to happen to move food down the digestive tract.

Now here is where the problem is. The smooth muscles are not doing what they need to be doing. The movement of food through the digestive system is either too fast or too slow. If the food moves too fast then diarrhea can occur because there will be too much water left in the waste. Also fast movement won’t allow enough time for the nutrients to be absorbed in the small intestine.

On the other hand, slow movement means that the mixture spends more time in the colon. The colon absorbs more water from the waste and it becomes hard and solid causing constipation.

Here is the difficult part. Does the digestive system function abnormally because the receptor nerves aren’t working properly? If the receptors send incorrect information to the brain then the brain uses that incorrect information to tell the digestive system what to do. So the brain tells the smooth muscle organs to function improperly because it received incorrect feedback.

Or is there something in the brain not right. If the brain receives correct signals from the receptor neurons and then provides incorrect function signals to the digestive system then the digestive results are again incorrect causing the IBS

Or is the problem with the nerves themselves? No body knows.

And here is something else to ponder. Neurobiologist Dr. Michael Gershon of Columbia University has discovered that the stomach and digestive system has as many neurons as the brain and he suggests that the stomach not the brain controls digestion. Perhaps even the stomach may be causing the irritable bowel syndrome problem.

The fact is that we just don’t know what causes the incorrect function of the smooth muscles in the digestive system to occur. We just don’t know what causes irritable bowel syndrome.

Numerous studies show that diets of fiber rich foods result in a significantly reduced risk of cancers, diabetes, digestive system problems, and heart disease. Many high fiber foods are also high in antioxidants which also has a positive effect on our holistic health.

Fiber adds bulk to the stool which allows bodily waste and toxins to move more quickly through the digestive tract to speed their transit through the lower intestine, out of the body, and improves the holistic health of the body.

A diet of high fiber foods may reduce the risk of breast cancer. High levels of estrogen encourage the formation of breast tumors. Foods high in fiber reduce the risk of breast tumors. The fiber binds with estrogen and prevents it from being absorbed into the bloodstream.

Colon health is improved because fiber adds bulk to the stool and lessens the time that the waste material is in the body. Fast passage through the digestive system relieves constipation, reduces increased pressure build up in the colon from straining, and reduces the incidence of acute attacks of diverticulitis and improves holistic health.

Fiber absorbs carbohydrates and cholesterol, slows their digestion and absorption into the bloodstream, and helps the body eliminate those carbohydrates and lower cholesterol.

Fiber supplements can help but supplements tend to only contain one type of fiber. Fiber supplements should not be a substitute for eating a varied diet of foods high in fiber.

Fiber is indigestible and passes quickly through the digestive system. Fiber rich foods absorb up to ten times their volume in water which makes them more filling so people tend to eat less than other foods. The less time that waste and toxins are in the body the greater the improvement in our holistic health.

I speak with experience when it comes to diverticulosis. The terrible pain that accompanies an attack of diverticulitis can be paralyzing and is a sure sign of poor colon health.

The difference between diverticulosis and diverticulitis? Diverticulosis is the condition of having pushed out areas in the colon that form debris catching pockets. These small pouches or pockets can look like tiny balloons attached to the colon walls. Diverticulitis results when these pockets become inflamed or worst case infected. Severe and acute pain in the left lower abdomen is a typical symptom of a diverticulitis attack.

The primary cause of diverticulosis is lack of fiber in the diet. Without enough fiber in your meals, you will become constipated; the material in your colon is packed and hard. Constipation causes a lot more pressure to develop in the large intestine during elimination of waste material. The increased pressure is exerted against the intestine walls. The walls of the intestine are not uniform in thickness and strength, some thinner wall areas will stretch more under the increased pressure and become permanently deformed. These stretched areas form small balloons or pockets that are called diverticuli. The condition is called diverticular disease also known as diverticulosis.

The solution to diverticulosis is preventing constipation. Eating a diet high in fiber will go a long way to improve colon health and preventing increased pressure in the colon during elimination which can cause the diverticuli to form.

You cannot cure diverticulosis once you have the condition but you can improve olon health and prevent the attacks of diverticulitis. Eat a diet high in fiber and use a high fiber supplement every day.

Constipation: An Overview of its Causes and SymptomsConstipation is a normal occurrence that has been estimated to occur to every individual in his or her lifetime. It’s been ascertained that as we get older, we have a higher tendency to become more constipated. People above the age forty are particularly susceptible to this because they are at the peak of their lives at that period. Men in this age bracket are often achieving lots of things at this time and hence, there is usually less time for them to eat well, and exercise as they have a bust schedule. Therefore, constipation in this period can be said to be caused by eating disorders or bad eating habits. When we eventually get constipation, how do we treat or get relief from it? Most people are all for the laxative and enema treatments. But feelers that we are getting from health boards all over the world are advocating that as much as possible that we avoid laxatives. Many people who have become very familiar with laxatives can even swear to its ability to make an individual dependent on it for bowel movement. The very last thing we want is to be subject to a mere chemical. However, to stem the continuous occurrence of constipation in the daily life of an individual, the best thing really is to change the eating habits. This can safely be said to drastically reduce the incidence of constipation as most of the constipation people get is from eating low fiber foods and excess fatty foods. Foods that are rich in fiber such as wheat, bran, psyllium husks work wonders in the relieving and consequent elimination of constipation and its frequent occurrence. The absence of high quantity of fluids –particularly water- is also an important contributor. Because we are always in a rush to achieve things, we then to for get to take at least eight glasses of water everyday. Hence, the stool ends up not having enough moisture to ease the passage of feces through the colon and rectum.Another contributing factor is the bad habit of holding back when we feel the need to “go”. Many people think because they are busy, it can always come later. Of course, it does come later but during that same period, some of the toxic waste from the stool might have been reabsorbed into the bloodstream. Not to mention the moisture that is also reabsorbed leaving the feces hard and dry. The victims may end up passing this feces, but there is always a tendency that some of the feces will remain in the colon. Hence, there won’t be a total elimination of the waste products. If colon cleansing is not done in due time, then there will be the incidence of toxic poisoning caused by the reabsorption of waste into the bloodstream, contaminating the blood, reducing the immunity of the individual and spreading disease in the body. For more information visit: http://www.bowtrolcoloncleanse.com/?aid=996759

Constipation Remedies: 5 Natural Constipation RemediesUntil recently, constipation was not taken into cognizance in the corporate world. Neither was its effects really looked into. However, recent surveys and estimates have shown that constipation is singularly responsible for the loss of over $2billion annually. As a result, it has become in fact very important to address the issue and its treatments. While some of us are very familiar with the use of enemas or laxatives, we are also finding that these have side effects and as a result, should be avoided as much as possible. For instance, it has been proven than laxatives are not only addictive, they make the individual dependent on them for bowel movements. That’s the reason some people are looking for alternative constipation remedies which do not become addictive and most importantly, not leave chemical residues in the body which can be harmful in the long term.If you have ever had constipation, you’ll agree with me that constipation is not only uncomfortable, it is embarrassing. When an individual is constipating, he is not in any way comfortable at all. Symptoms such as bloated abdomen, gas, headache, et.c accompany the onset of constipation. The causes of constipation are varied. But chief among them are unhealthy eating -non-consumption of high fiber content foods- lack of exercise, minimal fluid intake and changes in both life and environment such as changes in locations or traveling and pregnancy. Other contributing factors are diseases, and colon and rectum troubles. So what natural constipation remedies are fast action remedies?1. Boysenberry. The juice of this fruit is capable of functioning as a gentle laxative. It is to be used in the case of mild constipation not chronic ones.2. Cantaloupe fruit is a very great fruit and is adequate for helping to relieve constipation. Its high fiber content is what actually makes it very useful to those who have constipation. It is also a rich source of both Vitamins A and C and lots of minerals.3. Flaxseed oil has been proven time and again to be an effective constipation remedy. All you need for maximum results is to take 1-2 tablespoonfuls with lots of water immediately after lunch or dinner.4. Elderflower is also very effective. All you need is an infusion of it in water as many times as it is needed daily.5. Epsom Salts is also another good remedy. To use it as a constipation remedy, mix one teaspoonful in half glass of water jut before bed. Please not that it is bitter so the taste does not hit you unawares. For more information visit: http://www.bowtrolcoloncleanse.com/?aid=996759

Probiotics are dietary supplements containing potentially beneficial bacteria or yeast. According to the currently adopted definition by FAO/WHO, probiotics are: ‘Live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host’. [1] Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are the most common type of microbes used. LAB have been used in the food industry for many years, because they are able to convert sugars (including lactose) and other carbohydrates into lactic acid. This not only provides the characteristic sour taste of fermented dairy foods such as yogurt, but acts as a preservative, by lowering the pH and creating fewer opportunities for spoilage organisms to grow.

Probiotic bacterial cultures are intended to assist the body’s naturally occurring gut flora to reestablish themselves. They are sometimes recommended by doctors, and, more frequently, by nutritionists, after a course of antibiotics, or as part of the treatment for gut related candidiasis. Claims are made that probiotics strengthen the immune system. [2]

The rationale for probiotics is that the body contains a miniature ecology of microbes, collectively known as the gut flora. A number of bacterial types are thought to be thrown out of balance by a wide range of circumstances including the use of antibiotics or other drugs, excess alcohol, stress, disease, or exposure to toxic substances. In cases like these, the bacteria that work well with our bodies (see symbiosis) may decrease in number, an event which allows harmful competitors to thrive, to the detriment of our health.

Maintenance of a healthy gut flora is, however, dependent on many factors, especially the quality of food intake. Including a significant proportion of prebiotic foods in the diet has been demonstrated to support a healthy gut flora and may be another means of achieving the desirable health benefits promised by probiotics.

Experiments into the benefits of probiotic therapies suggest a range of potentially beneficial medicinal uses for probiotics. For many of the potential benefits, research is limited and only preliminary results are available. It should be noted that the effects described are not general effects of probiotics. All effects can only be attributed to the strain(s) tested, not to the species, nor to the whole group of LAB (or other probiotics).

The body is like a highly functional machine. A machine as we well know must go through a period of complete readjustment, cleaning, realigning, refurbishing et.c so also should our body. In our daily activities, we forget to check our bodies. We forget to take care of our bowels and as result, we sometimes become less effective than we are supposed to be. Let me explain.Let’s say you’ve got this very important meting that you need to be at and just about the time you sat down, you had this terrible urge to go. What do you do? Leave the delegation and go spend thirty minutes in the loo while keeping them waiting? Imagine what harm that can do to your business. So you see that not cleaning out your bowels can adversely affect the results you pursue. To effectively carry out an evacuation of your bowels, it is best to take something that will not affect or interfere with your daily activities. This is where using herbal supplements come in. Other forms require you to use interfering methods that you would not like. For example if you were to do a hydrotherapy, you would end up spending about ninety minutes in the clinic or at home. For more information visit: http://www.bowtrolcoloncleanse.com/?aid=996759
