I speak with experience when it comes to diverticulosis. The terrible pain that accompanies an attack of diverticulitis can be paralyzing and is a sure sign of poor colon health.
The difference between diverticulosis and diverticulitis? Diverticulosis is the condition of having pushed out areas in the colon that form debris catching pockets. These small pouches or pockets can look like tiny balloons attached to the colon walls. Diverticulitis results when these pockets become inflamed or worst case infected. Severe and acute pain in the left lower abdomen is a typical symptom of a diverticulitis attack.
The primary cause of diverticulosis is lack of fiber in the diet. Without enough fiber in your meals, you will become constipated; the material in your colon is packed and hard. Constipation causes a lot more pressure to develop in the large intestine during elimination of waste material. The increased pressure is exerted against the intestine walls. The walls of the intestine are not uniform in thickness and strength, some thinner wall areas will stretch more under the increased pressure and become permanently deformed. These stretched areas form small balloons or pockets that are called diverticuli. The condition is called diverticular disease also known as diverticulosis.
The solution to diverticulosis is preventing constipation. Eating a diet high in fiber will go a long way to improve colon health and preventing increased pressure in the colon during elimination which can cause the diverticuli to form.
You cannot cure diverticulosis once you have the condition but you can improve olon health and prevent the attacks of diverticulitis. Eat a diet high in fiber and use a high fiber supplement every day.
